If you have been wondering where I have been all week, let me tell you that I have been busy being "Super Mom". I do not have a cape but I have "Mom Powers" like no other. It's Plano West Homecoming week. I knew this day would come and I try not to get choked up and be a cry baby about my kids growing up, but it seems like only yesterday when he was in elementary school. Now he is a Junior in high school and he wants to go to Homecoming...with a date!!! oh my....
I grew up in the Dallas area and attended Richardson High School. I remember my Homecoming week and yes, we did a lot to prepare for the game, dance, etc.... but so much has changed since 1988 (ha) No one could have warned me of what was to come. I still can't believe how busy we were! All week the Juniors and Seniors dressed up each day in different costumes to represent school spirit. On Wednesday to kick off Homecoming, a huge parade, then Thursday night was the "Mum & Garter" exchange, then Friday night was the BIG Homecoming game against McKinney/Boyd at Clark Stadium and lastly, Saturday was the Homecoming dance. I enjoyed the entire week and appreciate the time to see the kids go through the process. Mission accomplished.
Now to bring it back to "THE" Mum :) This was definitely my favorite part of the Homecoming festivities.
I don't have a daughter and I have always been a little over the top when it comes to sparkle, so I figured this was my chance to have some fun. Because I have two sons, I can't remember the last time I was able to get "crafty" or pull out the glue gun. I needed to research these "mums" to figure out what my choices were and see what sizes, etc. to make sure my son has a "proper" mum.
First stop, the Mum Shop in Plano. I have never seen so many charms or bells ribbons or shiny things. I flashed back to my high school mum (see pic) I became obsessed with the idea of what this mum would look like. I realized that I took for granted the effort and dollars that get poured into these lovely shows of school spirit. I drove all over Dallas, Plano, Southlake, Richardson and anywhere I thought they might have something cool/cute/sparkly/noisy to add to this piece of art, excuse me, I meant mum that I am working on. I realized about half way through buying all the "stuff" for this wondermum, that I should have bought one. But I was already in it and needed to finish out this process, whatever that was! I still have no idea how I did it but I am thankful it all worked out and stayed glued together. Check out the pics!! I am so proud and my son was so surprised! It will be a memory that we will keep forever. Best part is that she loved it and all was well in Plano. On Sunday morning when I woke up, the past week became a blur but I instantly thought to myself, "Can't wait for next year!"
Believe me, I will be ready :)
